Treating Depression in Pittsfield with TMS Therapy

Living life in the grip of depression is not really living at all.  Depression robs its victims of joy, replacing it with despair.  Depression takes away one’s motivation to do anything productive, leaving one listless, fatigued, and frustrated.  Those who suffer from treatment-resistant depression may have given up all hope of ever being cured, having tried a series of antidepressants that failed to relieve the stubborn symptoms.  Others found the side effects of the medications—such as insomnia, weight gain, lack of sexual desire, irritability, and nausea—to be simply intolerable.

Now there is reason for new hope in the battle against depression because transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has arrived in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.  Achieve TMS East in Pittsfield provides safe and effective TMS therapy for treatment-resistant depression.  This exciting new technology is rapidly changing the treatment landscape for depression.

What is TMS?

TMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation technology that received FDA clearance in 2008 for treating depression.  In 2013 a newer version called deep TMS (dTMS) was also FDA cleared for treating persistent depression.  This new technology targets deeper regions of the brain resulting in higher response and remission rates in individuals with treatment-resistant depression.

TMS uses magnetic pulses that are targeted primarily to the left prefrontal cortex, the mood center of the brain, through a coil placed over the scalp.  TMS modulates brain chemistry as the magnetic pulses induce electrical currents that stimulate sluggish brain neurons in the limbic region.  Over a period of weeks, the treatment sessions can cause brain chemistry to be reset, resulting in improved mood and relief from many of the symptoms of depression.

TMS Pittsfield Treatment Sessions

TMS Pittsfield provides dTMS therapy in a relaxing, therapeutic setting.  In a typical dTMS treatment session, the patient will be seated in a comfortable chair while fitted with the helmet that contains the H-coil.  Deep TMS requires no sedation, so patients are fully alert during the treatment.  Most patients feel nothing during the 20-minute sessions, while some may feel a slight tapping sensation on the scalp.

Patients typically pass the time listening to their favorite music or watch television during the treatment session.  Following the dTMS treatment, patients are able to drive themselves to home or work and resume normal daily activities.  There is no down time necessary after a dTMS treatment session.

Deep TMS is very well tolerated by patients, with few to no adverse effects experienced.  Those who did report side effects cited mild to moderate headaches or scalp irritation, although these effects proved to be transient in nature.  Deep TMS is prescribed for 4-6 weeks, 5 days per week for best results.

TMS Treatment Results

Ongoing clinical trials continue to provide statistically significant evidence of the efficacy and safety of dTMS for treating depression.  For example, an extensive clinical study of 230 participants was conducted in 2013.  The double-blind, placebo-controlled study followed subjects who were located at 22 different locations in the U.S., Europe, Israel, and Canada. Using the Hamilton Depression Ratings System (HDRS-21), participants reported significant response and remission rates.

Approximately 60 clinical studies have been conducted globally on the effects of dTMS on treatment-resistant depression.  Evidence supports dTMS as a viable and effective alternative treatment for depression that was unresponsive to medication.  Patients begin experiencing improvements in sleep quality as early as the tenth session, with gradual improvements in concentration and mood later in the treatment cycle.
