How Successful is TMS?

TMS: a Safe and Effective Treatment for Depression

Nothing spells SUCCESS like results, so when it comes to finding a treatment for major depression that actually produces positive results the news should be shared far and wide.  Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an alternative therapy for treating individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) who have been deemed treatment-resistant.  After trialing multiple antidepressants without success, these patients have turned to TMS to do the job.

TMS therapy success stories are abundant.  A quick Google search offers dozens of pages of testimonials and study results that demonstrate how TMS has helped those suffering from treatment-resistant depression when most had lost all hope of a cure for their MDD.

TMS Explained

TMS is a noninvasive brain stimulation therapy that applies magnetic pulses directly through the scalp via a coil.  The magnetic fields induce electrical currents that are targeted toward the limbic region, located in the prefrontal cortex of the brain, where they stimulate the underactive brain cells—often a factor in depression.  Over the course of treatment, a 4-6 week period, brain chemistry is rebalanced, resulting in improved mood.

Deep TMS (dTMS) goes a step further in the treatment of depression.  Using an H-coil that is contained within a comfortable helmet, the currents are delivered deeper into the brain tissue (6cm versus 2.5 cm in standard TMS).  This deeper penetration combined with the design of the coil allow for even better treatment results for MDD patients in less time (only 20 minute sessions versus 40 minutes).

A typical dTMS session involved the patient being seated comfortably while fully alert.  After the doctor has determined the strength and rate of pulses, the patient is fitted with the helmet and relaxes while watching television or listening to music during the session.  After the treatment session the patient is free to drive back to work or home to resume normal activities.

TMS Clinical Trials Demonstrate Safety and Efficacy

Over 60 clinical studies of dTMS have been conducted both here in the U.S. and worldwide.  The ongoing trials continue to demonstrate dTMS to be both effective in providing statistically significant treatment results, including response and remission rates.  Deep TMS, which requires no anesthesia, is very well tolerated with minimal reports of adverse side effects.  The few reported symptoms, such as mild headache or scalp irritation, are transient in nature, resolving without intervention during the treatment regimen.

One dTMS study involved twenty different treatment sites, most in the U.S., with sites also participating in Canada, Israel, and Europe.  The study was a randomized, sham-controlled trial involving 181 participants.  The results of the study confirmed that, by the end of the trial, response rates were 44% for dTMS versus only 25% for the sham treatment, and remission rates were 31.8% for dTMS versus 22% for the sham treatment.

TMS Therapy Success Stories

When it comes to everyday people using TMS therapy to treat their stubborn MDD, the vast majority experience improvements in mood, sleep quality, and concentration by the end of the treatment.  Here are a few testimonials written by those that want to share their TMS therapy success stories:
